Tip #3 The relationship between aperture and speed

When I was first learning about photography, and they kept throwing things like f-stops and apertures, and speed priority, and depth of field... well, I found the whole lot so darn confusing.

Now, I could make this a really technical post. But I'm not going to.

Instead I am going to explain it in a way that I found made sense to me when I was first learning. It's probably not the best way to learn, but it worked for me, and my hope is that it works for you. It's a starting point, anyway.

And this is it:

The bigger the aperture = the smaller the number = the smaller the depth of field = the faster the shutter speed.

An aperture is represented by an f-stop. A typical DSLR camera's f-stop range will be between f/5.6 - f/22. My two favourite lenses are my 50mm/ 1.8 and my 90mm/2.8 Macro. On my 50mm, my largest aperture is f/1.8. I love using the lens wide open at around f1.8-f/2.2. But, because it's so wide open, what happens is the depth of field is REALLY shallow. Meaning, that the focal point is small, and everything else blows out of focus. Focal point becomes everything at a really wide open aperture, because if I'm really close to the subject, I can have a nose IN focus, and the eyes OUT of focus. Not great for portraiture unless it's intentional.

So, it stands to reason then, that your aperture is important when deciding HOW MUCH you want in or out of focus (depth of field). But, there's an important symmetry here: Because aperture is about how wide open the shutter is, it basically then allows either more or less light to enter into the camera. A big aperture (small f-stop) allows a lot of light to touch the camera's sensor. Great. But as you stop down, or in other words, as the aperture gets smaller (aka the numbers get "bigger"), there is less light touching the sensor, and therefore the shutter speed slows down, to allow enough light to touch the sensor. Not enough light = no picture (or at very best an underexposed picture).

There's a rule with shutter speed: anything under 1/60 and you'll get camera shake. Some of the newer cameras can do alright on a slower speed, but as a rule of thumb, this speed is the best one to work off for your average DSLR. So anything slower than this, and you'll either need a tripod, or you'll have to bump up your ISO (this on another lesson).

Here's an example to illustrate the point. Not the best photos, but you will at least see the relationship between aperture (f-stop), speed and depth of field. Note: I was using a tripod, hence why there was minimal camera shake. Again, not the best example (nor quality), but it illustrates the point:

Photobucket

See how at f/11 everything was mostly in focus? (Bit of camera shake here- I should've used the timer). And how at f/1.8 only the front dude is in focus? And how at f/11 the speed is REALLY slow? I should add here that the light today is quite dull, and it's late in the afternoon- hence the slow speeds.

For now, what you need to remember is that there is a relationship between your aperture and your speed. If you move one, you compensate with the other. And this directly effects the overall look and feel (and focus) of your picture. If it helps- just keep saying it over and over again. That really helped me.

Next week, we'll talk a bit about some of your modes on your camera, and then hopefully you can start practicing.

{Mommy Goggles} - Child Photographer Durban Ballito

You know, being a photographer is a great career! I love taking pictures of tummys, babies, and kiddos. I do especially enjoy the kiddos- and parents reactions when they see their beautiful pictures. I often get asked how I get other peoples children to smile/ look so good/ not pull funny faces.... but here's the funny thing about what I do: it's practically impossible to get decent photos of my own children!!

I have been doing some serious coaxing on them lately: practice smiles, no funny faces, catching them off-guard... anything to get a decent picture.

And on this particular occasion I succeeded in getting some great pictures of my eldest. Not many, mind you, but in my defence, I only took a few anyway. And look at my handsome boy! I can't believe how grown up he is becoming. He is a smart, sensitive and caring boy. He's 7 going on 18 though, and there are days I wish I could just press pause, or maybe even rewind to the sweet little boy with dimples who would do anything to please his mother... he is rapidly growing up, and I know in no time at all will really have no time for me whatsoever *sniff*

So proud of him (as I am of all my children)!

{Harris Family} - Child Newborn Maternity Photographer Ballito Durban

This was a long awaiting shoot... the weather has not been kind to us, plus we've had a few run ins with pink eye, flu and the like. So it was with much anticipation that we finally got around to actually doig the shoot!

And the weather was super kind to us this time... maybe a bit TOO kind... boy was it a warm work out.

This sweet little brother and sister were just adorable. I had so much fun with them. Children are funny things- because they're often hesistant when they first meet me- unsure of this strange lady, and all her equipment. But by the end, we're having so much fun, I have to remind myself to stop!!

Mum and Dad, I hope you all had as much fun as me... and I sure hope you like your sneak peek! I had a real hard time choosing which pics to post... there are too many more nice ones where these came from (and I wanted to save some of the best for your eyes to see first!).

Enjoy!

Such a serious face here... but I got amazing smiles too! Don't let this pic fool you... she was FULL of smiles!

This poor "Ellie" was being jumped on and thrown on the floor by little {S} (instigated by me, of course)... so much so, that it had to end in a cuddle! And little {T} was having fun in the tree with Dad... perfect photo op!

We had so much fun lying on the floor, then jumping, then on the floor again!

Can't wait for you to see the rest!

{Preggy Belly} - maternity newborn photographer durban ballito

Yay! Another girl is on the way!!

I really enjoy doing pregnancy shoots. Knowing that a sweet little bundle of joy is to come.. and all the promise that that brings. This shoot was great... and it was a cloudy day with occasional spurts of sun... a huge softbox, with great semi-moody-semi-blue skies! Just lovely for those outdoor shots.

And I am really excited to take photos of this little girl when she is born. LOVE taking photos of girls.

{Beautiful Bellies} - Newborn, Maternity & Child photographer Durban Ballito

Every belly, like every baby, is different. Some are round, some are small, some are large, some are low, some are high... but each just so gorgeous! And the best part is getting to meet the sweet little babies- which also are all so different.

Such a wonderful time in life. Over so quickly.

Beautiful {S} and her beautiful family. Can't meet to meet this little baby... and even more exciting is finding out what it's going to be... I love surprises!!

Don't you just love the sky?

The little man didn't seem too impressed.. all this waiting waiting (buddy, mum knows... she's been waiting for nearly 9 months!) :-)

{Belly Bebe} - Maternity, Newborn, Children portraiture, Ballito, Durban

I really love taking pictures of pregnant women. There's something magical about a pregnant belly. It's a promise of new life. Of hope. Of joy. Bringing a child into the world offers no greater privilege. And pregnant women really do glow... it's a happy time in a couple's life, and is very seldom captured to be remembered...

Once you've had all your children, you miss that beautiful belly. The little kicks, the hiccups. And all the scars of a pregnancy passed, like the stretch marks and the extra pound or two, are a reminder of the honour you had of bringing new life into the world. It should be treasured... but too often, in our rememberance of "being fat", we forget to savour the honour we've been given.

Beautiful C of course did not have an ounce of fat on her... and would probably put most "not pregnant people" to shame :) They are looking forward to welcoming their daughter into the world... as am I... I get the privilege of taking her first formal photographs! Can't wait! Particularly as she carries good genes... she's going to be pretty :)

35 weeks pregnant... and looking lovely....

{Oh-so-gorgeous Lips} - Newborn, baby, infant and Child photographer

Really, is there anything or beautiful than a babies lips? Especially when they're full of pout like this chap. This little guys was so amenable, letting me man-handle him. And really, at only 7 days old, he was just a champion!

R&P, here's a very little sneak peak... but before I spend my whole night editting all these gorgeous pics, I am going to shut my computer down and get some shut eye... yours pics will be ready in due course ;-)

{Boys will be Boys} - Child Photographer KZN

These children of mine are just treasures... but they're so sick of having me stick a camera in their face, that they seldom bother to smile at me anymore. My little one (who's not so little), was really putting on a show for me... and I was happy to snap away!! He's a fighter.... need I say more?!

How is it they my husband and I are able to produce two beautiful... but COMPLETELY different children! Chalk and cheese!!

{Tummy Time} - Ballito, Maternity, Infant & Child Photographer

I just LOVE preggie shoots. It's such a privilege to carry a baby inside you (I should know, I've carried 3!!)... so capturing it on camera for me, is such an honour. I had so much fun with R&P... and I can't wait for this little fella to arrive... especially cos I'll be taking his first professional pics!! Yay for me!

Seriously... how special is this moment:
